Do You Have An Asbestos Roof on Your Garage?

Back in the 1960’s; 1970’s and even the 1980’s it was fashionable
for roofs of out-buildings and sheds to have a covering of
corrugated roofing sheets, which usually meant an Asbestos Roof.
This was especially popular for your garage roof.

The main reason was  it was just about the cheapest
covering that was available
for an economic roof construction and it was so easy to fit.
There were other advantages, mainly it was light weight
and the corrugated roofing sheets
absorbed noise such as the rain landing on it.

The acoustic advantage was due to the roof construction and the shape
effect of the corrugated roofing sheets

Have you ever sat in a conservatory with a Polycarbonate roof and
listened to the rain?
Did it sound like “The End Of The World?”

In a shed with an asbestos roof, you have to
hold your breath to hear the rain

If you sat in a shed with an asbestos roof, you would have to
hold your breath to hear the rain even in the most violent storm.

Asbestos sheeting looked stark when it was new and it soon deteriorated
to become a complete eyesore

This was mainly because of the moss it encouraged to grow on the porous surface
of the Cement Bonded Asbestos Sheets

Now in the 2010’s people don’t think about what it looks like;
they just get emotional about the ‘A’ word
ASBESTOS!

In truth, let me put your mind at ease; the most dangerous thing about
Asbestos Cement Sheeting on your Garage Roof, is the risk of
falling through the sheets if you are foolish enough to walk on them.

For those of you who are interested in the technicalities;
the asbestos content of these sheets is generally
less than 5% and that small amount is totally bonded in cement

Asbestos Garage Roof?

Asbestos Garage Roof?
Is it going to kill my children?

To most people this is a ridiculous statement.  However, it is the essence of a telephone conversation I had recently with a very worried lady. It’s a symptom of all the hype and hysteria that is banded around about the “A” word.

If you believe all the hype in the media regarding asbestos you could be forgiven for thinking that you only had to see an Asbestos Garage Roof and you would be dead by the following week?

In reality, if you treat your asbestos garage roof with respect and common sense it is not a danger to you or anyone else.

If you look at the terminology first, the expression Asbestos Garage Roof is a misnomer. They are in fact cement sheets with a very small quantity of asbestos fibres bonded within the cement.  So they really should be called cement sheets.

An article explaining all the ramifications of an Asbestos Garage Roof will be published on this website in the next week or so

Whilst you wait, this very short video will give you a few ideas of what you can do with an Asbestos Garage Roof

Asbestos Garage Roof Gutter Detail?

Asbestos Garage Roof Gutter Detail?

This is a question asked very often once the idea of our Asbestos Garage Roof
over-sheeting system has been accepted.

Like anything else to do with Asbestos Garage Roofs, the Gutter Detail can be
dealt with in a number of ways; depending on the gutter age and condition.

Here are a couple of images, showing one way to solve this problem:

If the original guttering is in good serviceable condition
there is a special eaves flashing.

This is fitted in such a way that the rainwater from the
new sheeting drains effectively into the original
gutter.  This maintains the same drainage as the
original Asbestos Garage Roof.

There are thousands of Sheds and Garages up and down the UK
with Garage Roofing Sheets of asbestos cement.

Many of these, are now leaking; so what is the safe and legal solution?
