Asbestos Sheets on a Bathroom Roof
Asbestos sheets were used to cover the roof of this
Bathroom extension in Birmingham when it was built;
probably in the 1960’s
Asbestos sheets were used widely throughout the UK
during the 40’s; 50’s; 60’s and early 70’s. They were a
cheap effective, reliable roof covering that was readily
available and easily fitted as a DIY project.
There must be 1000’s of these type of extensions
up and down the country, all covered with
Asbestos Cement Sheets
The Asbestos sheets on this roof, like so many others
had become unsightly, covered as they were with an
abundant growth of moss and other vegetation
The bathroom was also very cold because at the time
the extension was built, insulation did not figure
prominently in peoples minds (or Building Regulations)
when they were focused on building extensions
Asbestos Sheets replaced with Rubber Roofing
The old Asbestos Cement Sheets were carefully removed,
double wrapped in heavy gauge polythene sheeting and
disposed of, strictly in accordance with the HSE
Health and Safety rules
After the roof was stripped the timbers were inspected
and sprayed with wood preserver. All suspect timbers
were replaced and supplemented with a new tanalised
timber frame to support a new roof deck of OSB board
and 200mm glass fibre insulation
The roof was finished off and made waterproof by adding
ClassicBond One Piece EPDM Rubber Roofing System.
