Do You Have An Asbestos Roof on Your Garage?

Back in the 1960’s; 1970’s and even the 1980’s it was fashionable
for roofs of out-buildings and sheds to have a covering of
corrugated roofing sheets, which usually meant an Asbestos Roof.
This was especially popular for your garage roof.

The main reason was  it was just about the cheapest
covering that was available
for an economic roof construction and it was so easy to fit.
There were other advantages, mainly it was light weight
and the corrugated roofing sheets
absorbed noise such as the rain landing on it.

The acoustic advantage was due to the roof construction and the shape
effect of the corrugated roofing sheets

Have you ever sat in a conservatory with a Polycarbonate roof and
listened to the rain?
Did it sound like “The End Of The World?”

In a shed with an asbestos roof, you have to
hold your breath to hear the rain

If you sat in a shed with an asbestos roof, you would have to
hold your breath to hear the rain even in the most violent storm.

Asbestos sheeting looked stark when it was new and it soon deteriorated
to become a complete eyesore

This was mainly because of the moss it encouraged to grow on the porous surface
of the Cement Bonded Asbestos Sheets

Now in the 2010’s people don’t think about what it looks like;
they just get emotional about the ‘A’ word

In truth, let me put your mind at ease; the most dangerous thing about
Asbestos Cement Sheeting on your Garage Roof, is the risk of
falling through the sheets if you are foolish enough to walk on them.

For those of you who are interested in the technicalities;
the asbestos content of these sheets is generally
less than 5% and that small amount is totally bonded in cement

Asbestos Sheets Replaced with Rubber

Asbestos Sheets on a Bathroom Roof

Asbestos sheets were used to cover the roof of this
Bathroom extension in Birmingham when it was built;
probably in the 1960’s

Asbestos Sheets on a Bathroom Roof

Asbestos Sheets on a Bathroom Roof

Asbestos sheets were used widely throughout the UK
during the 40’s; 50’s; 60’s and early 70’s.   They were a
cheap effective, reliable roof covering that was readily
available and easily fitted as a DIY project.

There must be 1000’s of these type of extensions
up and down the country, all covered with
Asbestos Cement Sheets

The Asbestos sheets on this roof, like so many others
had become unsightly, covered as they were with an
abundant growth of moss and other vegetation

The bathroom was also very cold because at the time
the extension was built, insulation did not figure
prominently in peoples minds (or Building Regulations)
when they were focused on building extensions

The old Asbestos Cement Sheets were carefully removed,
double wrapped in heavy gauge polythene sheeting and
disposed of, strictly in accordance with the HSE
Health and Safety rules

After the roof was stripped the timbers were inspected
and sprayed with wood preserver.  All suspect timbers
were replaced and supplemented with a new tanalised
timber frame to support a new roof deck of OSB board
and 200mm glass fibre insulation

The roof was finished off and made waterproof by adding

Rubber Roofing Overlay System

Overlay Your Felt Roof with Rubber Roofing

Rubber Roofing is gaining in popularity so much that it may soon
overtake Built-up Felt as the most popular flat roof covering

This is particularly so when refurbishing old felt roofs because in most cases
the old felt can be left in place and the new Rubber Roofing is installed
as an overlaying system

Rubber Roofing is the Best Choice for
Covering Old Felt Roofs

This roof was leaking because the old felt had reached the end of its useful life
Rather than strip of the failed felt, it was cleaned and prepared
before new plywood was added and this was capped off with
