Roofing on the Bounty

Refurbishing House Roof
in South Birmingham?

I was recently reminded of the very first contract carried out by Mayfield Roofing,
way back in 1984.

It was refurbishing house roof for a lovely lady, Miss Bligh.

She lived alone, in a large house in Harborne, one of the leafy suburbs of Birmingham.

The contract was refurbishing house roof for her and replace the gutters and fascias,
amongst other things which I can no longer remember.

I was reminded of this because we recently carried out similar contracts
in South Birmingham, refurbishing house roof.

I still remember Miss Bligh’s first words to me when I met her.
As she answered the door and I introduced myself And 

she said,  “Do you have a 715?”

This came as a shock to me because, at the time, the ’715′ was part of a system that
had recently been introduced by the Inland Revenue as a way of taxing
subcontractors in the building trade!

The shock to me it was that this little old lady knew all about subcontractor’s tax.

During subsequent conversations I discovered that she was a retired accountant
who specialised in the building trade.  It was flattering to know that a professional person
who had spent her entire working life with building firms
chose Mayfield Roofing to refurbish her house roof.

When I later mention to a colleague at the gym, we were refurbishing house roof for Miss Bligh
he said, ”I remember Miss Bligh; she used to do the books for the firm I worked for.”

What a small world?

It turns out that Miss Bligh was the great, great, great, grand daughter of
Vice Admiral William Bligh, Governor of New South Wales

William Bligh was the most famous Captain of the ill-fated Bounty
before it was taken over by Fletcher Christian and his mutineers.

According to Miss Bligh, Admiral William Bligh was much maligned by the press
and Hollywood films in their portrayal of him as very a cruel man in the many
films of Mutiny on the Bounty

Asbestos Garage Roof?
Is it going to kill my children?

To most people this is a ridiculous statement.  However, it is the essence of a telephone conversation I had recently with a very worried lady. It’s a symptom of all the hype and hysteria that is banded around about the “A” word.

If you believe all the hype in the media regarding asbestos you could be forgiven for thinking that you only had to see an Asbestos Garage Roof and you would be dead by the following week?

In reality, if you treat your asbestos garage roof with respect and common sense it is not a danger to you or anyone else.

If you look at the terminology first, the expression Asbestos Garage Roof is a misnomer. They are in fact cement sheets with a very small quantity of asbestos fibres bonded within the cement.  So they really should be called cement sheets.

Leaks in Factory Roofs are often caused by poor  attention to detail where Flues, Vents, Chimneys and other protrusions penetrate the Factory Roof.

Stops Gutters Leaking – For Good!

Fit New Gutters & Fascias

One of the cheapest and most cost-effective methods of improving your house is to fit new Gutters & Fascias.   Here are very few pictures that demonstrate what I mean.

Cast Iron Gutter with brackets rusted away and eaves felt rotted

In this first image, you can see daylight between the gutter and fascia indicating that the under tile felt has rotted away in this area. This has allowed water to run between the gutter and the fascia, which in turn has caused the gutter brackets to rust away.

If you look closely, you may also notice the mould around the joint to the left of the outlet.
This is a very god indication that the gutter is leaking.

As this cast-iron gutter is no longer supported, it presents a serious hazard as it could fall at any time.

New uPVC Gutter fitted onto new Fascia & Soffit with Felt Support Tray to prevent splashback

Here you can see, in this second image, that the fascia has been clad with new UPVC.

Where you previously saw daylight between the gutter and fascia, the Felt Support Tray has been fitted to ensure there really is no splashback down the fascia.

The sections of wood, that were deteriorating were replaced with New Treated Timber and the remaining area was sprayed with wood preserver prior to fitting the new Fascia and Soffit
