Asbestos Garage Roof?

Asbestos Garage Roof?
Is it going to kill my children?

To most people this is a ridiculous statement.  However, it is the essence of a telephone conversation I had recently with a very worried lady. It’s a symptom of all the hype and hysteria that is banded around about the “A” word.

If you believe all the hype in the media regarding asbestos you could be forgiven for thinking that you only had to see an Asbestos Garage Roof and you would be dead by the following week?

In reality, if you treat your asbestos garage roof with respect and common sense it is not a danger to you or anyone else.

If you look at the terminology first, the expression Asbestos Garage Roof is a misnomer. They are in fact cement sheets with a very small quantity of asbestos fibres bonded within the cement.  So they really should be called cement sheets.

An article explaining all the ramifications of an Asbestos Garage Roof will be published on this website in the next week or so

Whilst you wait, this very short video will give you a few ideas of what you can do with an Asbestos Garage Roof

Stop Gutters Leaking – For Good!

The Gutterline System

Stops Gutters Leaking – For Good!

Professionals’ choice for guaranteed results

  • Joint free and leak free
  • No messy adhesives
  • No internal disturbance
  • Individually made-to-measure
  • Suitable for most buildings

any length……any width……any profile

The simple fact is that Gutterline STOPS gutters leaking.

Easily; Efficiently; Cost Effectively; Permanently!

Gutterline is manufactured exclusively by H D Sharman Ltd from their own patented Rubberised Plygene material, which is incredibly hard-wearing and carries a 20 year guarantee. Yet it is pliable enough to mould to any gutter profile and will tolerate changes in temperature and building movement without splitting or cracking.

The unique Gutterline system creates a totally sealed, fully waterproof ‘gutter within a gutter’, which when installed correctly will not allow any water to penetrate behind or beneath it. The original gutter is left untouched – leaks and all – so there is no need for any structural work and Gutterline can be fitted even in damp conditions.

  • Made to measure for every project
  • Supplied on a seamless, joint free roll
  • No messy adhesives
  • No internal disturbance
  • The only system of its type with BBA Approval

Rubberised Plygene Gutterline is a ‘Total System’ and includes standard and custom moulded outlets, corners, overflows, side boxes, T junctions, weirs and syphonic outlets etc.

Gutters & Fascias in New uPVC

Fit New Gutters & Fascias

One of the cheapest and most cost-effective methods of improving your house is to fit new Gutters & Fascias.   Here are very few pictures that demonstrate what I mean.

Cast Iron Gutter with brackets rusted away and eaves felt rotted

In this first image, you can see daylight between the gutter and fascia indicating that the under tile felt has rotted away in this area. This has allowed water to run between the gutter and the fascia, which in turn has caused the gutter brackets to rust away.

If you look closely, you may also notice the mould around the joint to the left of the outlet.
This is a very god indication that the gutter is leaking.

As this cast-iron gutter is no longer supported, it presents a serious hazard as it could fall at any time.

New uPVC Gutter fitted onto new Fascia & Soffit with Felt Support Tray to prevent splashback

Here you can see, in this second image, that the fascia has been clad with new UPVC.

Felt Support Tray

Where you previously saw daylight between the gutter and fascia, the Felt Support Tray has been fitted to ensure there really is no splashback down the fascia.

This Fascia needs attention and the gutter is broken

The sections of wood, that were deteriorating were replaced with New Treated Timber and the remaining area was sprayed with wood preserver prior to fitting the new Fascia and Soffit

Roofing Service – Leak in your Bonnet?

Here is a roofing service problem that is very common but is often ignored
because it is normally “Out of Sight and Out of Mind!”

When a row of hip ridges looks as miserable as these,
you may suspect there is a problem

However, leaks may occur before the cement drops out
If the ‘Bonnets’ have not been fitted correctly

Here is how to do it properly:

What To Do With My Asbestos Roof

There are literally thousands of Sheds and Garages up and down the UK
with roofs of asbestos cement.

Many of these,  built in the 1950′s and 60′s and are now beginning to leak

In the ‘Good Old Days,’ the policy was to scrape of the moss off of the sheets
and coat the roof with a bitumen treatment.

Scraping the moss off is frowned upon these days because of the risks of
disturbing asbestos fibres that may be released from the sheet

So, what is the best solution?

One idea is to overlay the roof with Insulation and Steel Sheets

First you must fit the spacer bars

Then, if you wish, you can add Insulation.

Here we have added a glass fibre quilt

Then you fit the roof sheets

Then, when the sheeting is done, you must attend to the edge details

And the roof is then finished

“Do I Need Snow Guards?”

“Do I Need Snow Guards?”

That is a question I have been asked 100′s of times in the last 2 weeks

So; what is the answer?

Well, my answer is this.

If there is something under your roof that would be damaged
if a pile of snow fell on it; then “Yes”  You need them

Here are a few images of some we have fitted

These were fitted onto Rafter Brackets

These are fitted onto Brackets Screwed to the Wall
